HEY KIDS
Hello my lovelies! Two things, for purposes of Big Bang:

1. What are you favourite examples of female artists covering songs by male artists?
2. What are your favourite WOMEN ARE BADASS songs?

Cheers me dears! ♥

No More "I Love You's" by Annie Lennox is also a great cover of a song originally sung by a man.

Love the icon too (didn't make it though xD), because of Bryan Dick's hotness and I love All the Small Things.

I've only seen the first episode, but I did rather love it-will try and catch up with the rest at some point, or buy the DVD-he's gorgeous!

Leonard Cohen's The Traitor covered by Martha Wainwright.
Snow Patrol's Run covered by Leona Lewis.

I'm sure there are more I can't think of right now (for both #1 & #2). *hmmmm*

Sukie in the Graveyard by Belle and Sebastian

The Wanting Comes in Waves/Repaid OR The Queen's Rebuke/The Crossing by The Decemberists, because Shara's scary as hell AND majorly badass.

Woman King by Iron and Wine, and not really ladies are badass, but Evening on the Ground (Lilith's Song) might be a nice addition.

Alice and Sarah by Orion Rigel Dommisse - idk, it's not quite what you're looking for, but it might fit the Morgana/Nimueh aesthetic.

Sorry, that's the best I seem to be able to come up with right now that isn't glaringly obvious.
so disarming, darling: mixtapes are for lovers.[info]marketchippie on May 6th, 2009 09:12 pm (UTC)
Ooh, yes, the Decemberists songs there are too epic for words. (Also, everything from Woman King is fabulous.)

I STILL haven't had time to get into the new Decemberists stuff. Not having access to my own computer - FAIL FAIL FAIL.

The Iron and Wine stuff sounds great, I shall go a-searching. What's the Orion Rigel Dommisse stuff like?
Morgan: a: drifting through my open mind[info]darkangsty42 on May 6th, 2009 09:24 pm (UTC)
RE The Decemberists: YOU MUST. It is so many levels of epic that it hurts my heart.

The entire Woman King EP is faboo, but I really recommend the first and last song.

Orion Rigel Dommisse is like Regina Spektor's creepy cousin. Her voice and style makes me think of a forest in late fall, and possibly getting killed. Happy thoughts! This isn't the song I was thinking of but it gives you a good feel for her style.

1. Dar Williams' cover of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb".
2. Oh my, at the moment, it's Pink's "U and Ur Hand".
if i become antique, you'll collect me: bob; baby blue[info]acalicodress on May 6th, 2009 02:29 pm (UTC)
Without doubt Madeleine Peyroux's cover of You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go (Bob Dylan).

Also The Be Good Tanyas version of When Doves Cry (originally Prince).

Women sre badass? Hmmm.... Shawon Colvin's Get Out of this House Can't think of anythign else at the moment.

1. Well, the entirety of Tori Amos's Strange Little Girls album is her covering songs by male artists. The whole thing is pretty great but her cover of Eminem's "'97 Bonnie and Clyde" scared me so badly when I first heard it.

I also like Bruce Springsteen's "I'm On Fire" covered by Bat For Lashes, Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" covered by Rasputina, and Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" also covered by Rasputina. And also Rasputina's cover of CCR's "Bad Moon Rising." Okay fine, Rasputina is just awesome.

2. Rasputina's "Saline the Salt Lake Queen"
Neko Case's "People Got A Lotta Nerve"
Yeah Yeah Yeahs's "Heads Will Roll"
music lobe[info]eisenlunge on May 6th, 2009 06:11 pm (UTC)
I love how you love me by Camera Obscura and Where is my Mind by Emmy the Great. Oh actually I think Emmy did some Wave Pictures covers too, in which case, EPIC WIN.

Women are badass. Hm. Sick but I can't think of any. I suppose a few Martha Wainwright songs maybe.
music lobe[info]eisenlunge on May 6th, 2009 06:11 pm (UTC)
Oh also I absolutely adore Slumber Party's cover of Love will Tear us Apart Again
music lobe[info]eisenlunge on May 6th, 2009 06:12 pm (UTC)
Pfft, what? Strike the again. What sort of Joy Division fan are you Ciara?

Ach, all those are wonderful. And, when I was searching for the Slumber Party LWTUA, I found it on Pukekos ♥
Little Miss Gemmakins[info]gem_pinkeh on May 6th, 2009 06:50 pm (UTC)
Ones that I has thunked of for part the first:
Run by Leona Lewis (Original-Snow Patrol)
Careless Whisper by The Gossip (Original-George Michael)

...I can't actually think of any more. I fail...

This is a placeholder comment for WOMEN ARE BADASS songs of which I have many but only 30 seconds before I have to leave: so. Don't let me forget.

*pokes* :)
erture[info]erture on May 9th, 2009 05:22 pm (UTC)
Thanks, I knew I was gonna do that. Some of these fit the "badass women" theme topically, and some because of badass female vocals, and some both.

Pretty much any Ani DiFranco, but especially "I'm No Heroine"

The Decemberists "A Cautionary Song" and quite a lot off the album The Hazards of Love. I think the best is "The Wanting Comes in Waves/Repaid" but it's all so tied together it's hard to be sure. I just noticed this got recced already so yeah, you def must get this album, it's epic.

The Dixie Chicks "Not Ready to Make Nice"

The Donnas "Fall Behind Me" and "Revolver"

The Dresden Dolls.

Fiona Apple.

Kimya Dawson, "I Like Giants"

Lisa Loeb, "Firecracker"

The Last Five Years Soundtrack "I Can Do Better Than That"

a lot of Tilly and the Wall but especially "Pot Kettle Black"

Wicked, "Defying Gravity"
#: always something there to remind me.[info]loversatnight on May 6th, 2009 08:20 pm (UTC)
Cat Power's cover of "How Can I Tell You?" and Lotte Kestner's covers of Leif Erikson (originally by Interpol) and Flume (originally by Bon Iver)...I think those are my top there.

I don't have one? Hahaha, but obviously, I think women are badass.
so disarming, darling: mixtapes are for lovers.[info]marketchippie on May 6th, 2009 09:17 pm (UTC)
Regina Spektor's cover of "Chelsea Hotel No. 2" (Leonard Cohen) is freakishly wonderful. And I'm rather a fan of Jenny Owens Young's cover of "Hot in Herre", if only because it takes more than a little win to take that shit on.
Bright Young Thing: [music] regina[info]sophieisgod on May 6th, 2009 09:20 pm (UTC)
Oh man, I just youtubed the that "Hot in Herre" cover and it is DELIGHTFUL! Joy joy joy abounds. More things should be set in igloos.
